The Detective Bureau also has a newly formed Computer Forensics division where many of the computer crimes listed above are investigated by specially trained detectives. This division handles all forensic audits since to minimize the turn around time in forensic investigations, since they can be extremely time consuming. The ultimate goal of the computer forensics division is a proactive approach in our attempts to keep children safe from child predators. This division also has the capabilities to redifine video recordings to assist investigators in tracking down and identifying criminals.
The Torrington Police Department also has a crime scene van that is used on major crime scenes and while assisting the Connecticut State Police's Major Crime Unit. In 2010, the detective division also acquired a grant that enabled us to train and purchase metal detectors that can be used on land as well as underwater. This grant also allowed detectives to purchase a forensic drying cabinet in an investigator's ongoing attempts to minimuize contamination and maximize the use of physical evidence.
The vice/narcotics unit is also part of the Detective Bureau as they work toward not only arresting those that possess illegal drugs, but linking the drugs to their origin.
